Where WattAscent is different

WattAscent was built around a simple idea: training that adapts to your life, while making you faster. Here’s what that means in practice.

Less than half the price

WattAscent is $99 a year, with one plan and every feature included. At the TrainerRoad prices checked in September 2026, that’s less than half the yearly cost. Both come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so trying either one is low risk.

All of your training counts

Most riders don’t only ride indoors. When you connect Strava, WattAscent counts your outdoor rides and other activities toward your training load and the time since your last ride.

By comparison, TrainerRoad’s own guide says runs sync to its calendar with load estimated from your perceived effort, and that changes to your runs don’t affect your cycling workouts (TrainerRoad, n.d.-b).

FTP rules you can see

Both apps keep your FTP current without regular all-out tests. WattAscent spells out exactly how its Adaptive FTP works:

If you’d rather test, WattAscent includes a Ramp Test, 20-minute test, 8-minute test and a Durability test. New riders who don’t know their FTP start with the Ramp Test.

A readiness check before hard sessions

WattAscent offers an optional warm-up that checks how ready you are. Based on the Lamberts and Lambert Submaximal Cycle Test, your trainer holds three steady heart-rate levels, then WattAscent measures how quickly your heart rate recovers. Research on this test found heart-rate recovery measured after it was reliable and tracked performance in trained cyclists (2024 LSCT study). If you’re not ready, WattAscent can ease the workout or swap it for an endurance ride.

Coach Watson rides with you

Coach Watson is WattAscent’s in-ride coach. Before a workout it explains what you’re doing and why. During the ride it gives cues on form, breathing, pacing, cadence and fueling, matched to the intensity you’re riding. You can choose how chatty it is and have cues read aloud.

Works with Zwift

WattAscent can export your workouts and plans as .zwo files, so you can ride them in Zwift.

What to check before you switch

Who each app suits

Choose TrainerRoad if you want a mature app on every platform today, you value years of rider data and a large community, and the higher price isn’t an issue.

Choose WattAscent if you want adaptive training at under half the price, you ride outdoors or do other sports and want all of it counted, or you like seeing the rules behind your FTP and plan. You’ll need Chrome or Edge with Bluetooth for now.

Not sure? Both apps offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Pick the one that fits your devices and budget, ride it consistently for a few weeks, and judge it on whether your workouts feel right for you and your FTP is moving.
